Climate Vault Launches RFP Round for Innovative Carbon Dioxide Removal Projects

Carbon dioxide removal – aka CDR – is a nascent and rapidly developing field.

Why is so much attention and emphasis going to CDR? Not only is it an industry ripe for innovation, but such innovation is crucial for the world to avert the worst effects of climate change and achieve the Paris Agreement’s target of limiting warming to 1.5° C.

The Climate Vault RFP for Innovative Carbon Dioxide Removal Solutions categorizes projects according to their primary mechanisms into three distinct pathways: Oceanic, Technological, and Terrestrial.

In this four-part CDR webinar series, Climate Vault’s CDR Projects Manager Brynn Esterly discusses the state of carbon dioxide removal, including such facets as public policy, social & environmental equity, and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV).

The participants in these on-demand webinars cover the full breadth of CDR pathways and represent the diverse approaches that solving the climate crisis will require.

The Oceanic Pathway

The world’s oceans function naturally as carbon sinks. Projects in the Oceanic pathway enhance these natural carbon sequestration capabilities. In this webinar, Sergey Ivliev (Vlinder) and Steve Oldham (Captura) discuss the state of the Oceanic pathway and the promise of these solutions for removing historic carbon.

The Technological Pathway

The Technological pathway of carbon dioxide removal solutions consists of highly-engineered projects that can operate either independent of, or in collaboration with, environmental processes. Webinar participants Bryan Eagle (Glanris), Andrew Jones (Carba), and Nuno Pereira (Holy Grail) cover how this space may evolve in the next ten years, including the policy landscape for CDR solutions in this pathway.

The Terrestrial Pathway

Soil, plants, and microorganisms each sequester and store atmospheric carbon as part of their natural cycles. Solutions in the Terrestrial pathway utilize these processes. Join panelists Jabu Madlala (SmartAgrIoT), Josh Silverman (Windfall Bio), and Ning Zeng (Carbon Lockdown) as they dig into the challenges and possibilities in this space, including considerations of social & environmental equity.

The Terrestrial Pathway: Spotlight on Enhanced Weathering

As the only two webinar participants whose CDR projects utilize a terrestrial carbon removal approach called “enhanced weathering” (EW), Simon Manley (UNDO) and Tim Preisenhammer (Eion Carbon) get to dig into the current (and future) state of Terrestrial solutions with a more focused perspective on EW through the application of basalt and olivine.
