Climate Vault Launches RFP Round for Innovative Carbon Dioxide Removal Projects

Bringing global carbon levels back into balance.

Carbon reductions alone are not enough to address the impacts of climate change. To rebalance earth’s carbon cycle, we need to support and incentivize technologies that remove carbon from the atmosphere.

World-Renowned Expertise

Navigating the emerging carbon dioxide removal (CDR) space can be overwhelming. Industry-leading experts, the Climate Vault Tech Chamber, led by former US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, cut through the complexity for you.

Risk Reduction Framework

There are 6 key criteria within our risk reduction framework, ensuring only the most promising, innovative, and scalable Carbon Dioxide Removal projects are admitted into our portfolio.

1. Innovation

The novelty of the technology and business model

2. Technical and Economic Feasibility

The likelihood that the project can deliver the expected tonnes of carbon removal in a quantifiable manner within the proposed time frame

3. Additionality

The extent to which a Climate Vault grant award will enable more carbon to be removed from the atmosphere than would have otherwise been possible without the grant award

4. Permanence

The extent to which the project enables durable carbon storage of at least 50 years

5. Social Impact

The extent to which the project also advances environmental and social objectives

6. Leakage

The extent to which the project activities cause additional emissions to occur elsewhere

Octavia Carbon

DAC Project

Octavia Carbon is the Global South’s first Direct Air Capture (DAC) Company based in Nairobi, Kenya. They design, build, and will soon deploy geothermal-integrated DAC technology that filters CO2 from the atmosphere. Their mission is clear: To reverse the effects of climate change and end the fossil fuel age by deploying and scaling low-cost DAC in Kenya. Octavia Carbon’s DAC approach leverages geothermal waste heat abundant in the region to address the energy-intensive nature of DAC, cutting down their DAC electricity requirements by >80%. This, combined with Kenya’s low manufacturing base, makes them well-positioned to rapidly scale DAC down the cost curve.

Carbon Lockdown

WHS Project

Carbon Lockdown is a Public Benefit LLC dedicated to the advancement and scaling of Wood Harvesting and Storage (WHS) via Wood Vault, a specially engineered structure that durably stores sustainably sourced woody biomass in a shallow geological layer for long-duration carbon removal. WHS is a hybrid nature-engineering method spun out of 15 years of university research. It is low-cost and highly scalable, with co-benefits of waste utilization and fire risk reduction.
